Deep tissue massage explained: how it's different

Amor Therapies · Bethnal Green, East London

Amor Therapies and State of Change Clinic — Smith machine and bench for strength work.

What makes it 'deep'

Deep tissue massage applies sustained, firmer pressure to reach the lower layers of muscle and the connective tissue around it, rather than staying at surface level. It's slower and more deliberate than a lighter massage, working through tension that's built up over weeks or months rather than a single bad day.

What it tends to help with

Chronic tightness in the neck, shoulders and lower back, tension held from repetitive movement or long hours at a desk, and recurring tight spots that a lighter massage never quite gets into are the kinds of things deep tissue work is suited to.

What it feels like

Expect firmer pressure than a relaxation massage, and it's not unusual to feel a bit tender for a day or so afterwards, similar to how a proper stretch or workout can leave you feeling. Drinking water and taking it easy that evening helps.

How it's delivered at Amor Therapies

Every session is multi-modal, meaning deep tissue massage is combined with cupping or percussion therapy where it will help, rather than following one fixed routine. A Recovery Starter session is a straightforward way to try it, and Office Relief is built specifically around the desk-related tension most people carry.
