What is sports massage, and who is it for?

Amor Therapies · Bethnal Green, East London

Amor Therapies and State of Change Clinic — The gym floor, kitted out for every kind of session.

Not the same as a relaxation massage

Sports massage is built around function rather than comfort. It uses firmer, more targeted pressure to work through the muscle groups under the most load, rather than the broad, lighter strokes of a spa-style massage. It can feel more intense in the moment, but that's because it's doing a different job.

What it's actually doing

The aim is to loosen tight muscle, improve mobility, and reduce the risk of the kind of niggle that turns into a proper injury if it's ignored. It's also commonly used between training blocks to help the body recover faster, rather than only after something's already gone wrong.

Who tends to book it

You don't need to be a competitive athlete. Weekend footballers, regular gym-goers, runners training for an event, and people whose jobs are physically demanding all get the same core benefit: a body that's under regular strain, treated properly.

What a session at Amor Therapies involves

Sessions combine deep tissue work, percussion therapy and hijama cupping depending on what's needed. Our Athlete Tune-Up is built for a quick, targeted session before or after training, while a Recovery Plus or Recovery Elite session gives more time to work through several areas properly.
